Schools and Community Projects

Talawa works with people of all ages and abilities in a variety of settings. Our work with these groups follows two directions, and supports liefelong learning through:

  1. Our artistic programme. This involves educational packages connected to our productions;
  2. Our bespoke workshop programme. We create projects and residences to meet the needs of students, participants and theatre makers.

We place a strong emphasis on partnership, working closely with teachers, group leaders and participants to identify project objectives at the outset and to evaluate success at the end. Project aims can be curriculum-based, artistic or related to participants' personal/social development. Each project varies widely, however, they often include elements of devising and/or in-role work. Themes have included: concepts of identity, the Anansi stories, Windrush and concepts of home, Olaudah Equiano, the poetry of Linton Kwesi Johnson, KS3 Maths, English and Science.

"An amazing workshop ... I learnt more in those few hours about Black history than I did in the 13 years I spent in formal education, not to mention the knowledge I gained on the status of Black actors in the industry. I honestly could've done that session all week (I would've had more questions too, no doubt)."

"We've been having a lot of fun, but then again we've been producing good work, our levels have gone higher and we've been moving up sets and our work is progressing very well"
Year 7 student, Lambeth Academy

"For me it was affirmation that this kind of work can be used to good effect in prisons. I think the men appreciated a rare opportunity to engage and express themselves with an artistic medium that they could instantly relate to."
Race Equality Officer, HMP Wandsworth

"When we enjoy what we learn, we remember it and we have been enjoying this."
